About my interests...
Why I am choosing my major...
I am majoring in Computer Science because of my great interest in the study of
computers and their processes.
Growing up with technology...
As a child, I always enjoyed tinkering with devices such as my parent's TVs or phones. During
this
time, smartphones
were just being introduced, so the idea of having a screen in your hands was relatively new,
therefore it
allowed me to almost grow with the technology in a way. I would help family members fix technical
issues on their phones
and show them new features. I received a tablet at a young age, I was monitored of course, but this
technology was
something new and great. I would play games, watch videos, research cool topics, and connect with
distant family
members & friends; it was like a new world. I took pride in updating my device and apps because
keeping everything up
to date made me feel like I was in charge. In 2017, I had a vast knowledge of computers, to the
point where I was ready
to build one. I had done much research about the process of building a computer, and I knew it was
time to start. I used
my saved up money to buy all the parts and I couldn't wait for the delivery day. When they finally
came, my dad let me take
control of the whole project, assembling the parts and downloading the required software. The
immense joy I had when I
started it for the first time was unbelievable. The fact that I had built a computer with my own
hands was something
I couldn't fathom at first. If I was already on the fence about a future career, this experience
took me right over. It
was at this time that I declared to my parents my interest in Computer Science, specifically
engineering. Even to this
day, I still use the same computer I built to play games, do schoolwork, or just browse the web.
First time coding...
In high school, I knew
I had to start my coding debut sometime soon, but I didn't know when to start exactly. In my Junior
year, I took a
programming class that taught me Python. Like building a computer, being able to code a program,
troubleshoot, and finally
see it work sparked a special feeling within me. I would code as much as I could, and if I was
stumped,
I would take a break. During these breaks, whether I would be eating or resting, I would think of
how I could fix
and improve my code. This programming class was my passport to new skills. In my current Senior
year, I am
taking an AP Computer Principles class, which also teaches me Java code to use within app
development. Again,
watching code work not only in an environment but also on an app, is something that you take pride
in as an individual.
With all of these experiences, my interest in Computer Science just skyrocketed, leading me to where
I am today.
